About Barry

Barry Golten trained as an Integrative Counsellor in the late 1990s and has spent much of his career applying those skills within the charity support sector. He worked first as a support worker and then for 19 years as a manager, developing practice and leadership in services that support people through difficult life challenges. In 2008 he began to explore Solution Focused Brief Therapy and went on to qualify in that model in 2012, after which he offered therapy, coaching and training rooted in solution-focused principles.

In 2021 Barry joined KCA Training as a Trainer and Consultant, delivering training in trauma, attachment and resilience. Over time he has brought together elements from person-centred practice, psychodynamic understanding and solution-focused work to form an integrative way of working that values all parts of a person, acknowledges the influence of past relationships and trusts the client’s resources to move forward. Barry holds BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) accreditation.

His practice emphasises a regular, trusting therapeutic relationship in which he is fully present and prepared to accompany clients on a journey of exploration, hope and possibility. He offers therapy, coaching and training with a focus on practical change and deeper understanding.

Integrative approaches and online therapy for flexible care

Internal Family Systems (IFS) invites clients to explore the different parts of their inner world - the protective, reactive and wounded parts - and to develop a compassionate, leading self that can soothe and guide those parts. It is helpful for people working with longstanding patterns, self-criticism, trauma responses and relationship difficulties.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a future-oriented approach that concentrates on strengths and small, practical steps toward change. It supports people who want to identify clear goals, build on what already works and move forward without spending excessive time on problem analysis.

Barry integrates these methods with a person-centred stance that values empathy, acceptance and collaboration. Finding the right therapeutic approach is part of the process - Barry will work with each client to decide together which combination of methods best fits their needs, goals and preferences, adjusting the focus over time as progress unfolds.

Online therapy offers practical flexibility: sessions by video call, phone, live chat or text-based messaging make it easier to fit therapy around work, family and travel. This range of options increases accessibility for international clients and for those who prefer to receive support from home, while still working with licensed professionals to address a wide range of life challenges.
